Buying Games & Licences

Free games cost nothing and need no purchase. Every paid game on edu.games is licensed the same way: per seat, per year, where a seat is one student. You choose how many seats and whether the licence renews itself.

What a seat is

A seat is claimed by a student the first time they play or launch the game, and it stays theirs for the life of the licence. Seats are pooled across all your classes — one seat per distinct student, handed out first come, first served — so buy enough for the number of different students who will play, not the number of classes. One licence covers every build of a game: a student with a seat can play the browser version and the Windows version. You, the buying teacher, play without using a seat.

Buying seats

  1. Create at least one class first — checkout refuses with “Create a class before buying seats” otherwise.
  2. Open Browse Games and click the game. The price is shown per seat per year. Use ▶ Preview Free to play the full game yourself before deciding.
  3. Set Seats (1 to 500).
  4. Leave Auto-renew yearly (cancel anytime) ticked for a subscription, or untick it and choose Years (1 to 10) to pay once for a fixed term. The total is shown before you continue.
  5. Press Subscribe (auto-renew) or Buy Seats (fixed term). You are taken to Stripe checkout; prices are in Australian dollars. When payment completes you return to My Games with a “Purchase complete” notice and an emailed receipt.

After buying

A licensed game appears on the dashboard of every student in any of your classes straight away — you don’t have to assign it, though you can still assign it to curate a class’s list. Buying more seats later adds a second licence for the same game; the seats pool together.

My Games

My Games lists your Seat Licences grouped by game, with a headline like 12 of 30 seats used and a table per licence:

  • CoversAll your classes for seat pools.
  • Seats used — claimed seats out of the total for that licence.
  • RenewalRenews and a date for subscriptions, Expires and a date for fixed terms.
  • Manage — on subscriptions only; opens Stripe’s billing portal where you can update the card or cancel.

The page warns you in amber when a game has five or fewer seats left, and in red at one or none, so you can top up before a new student is locked out.

Renewals, cancellation and refunds

  • Subscriptions renew each year at the same seat count. Cancel from Manage; the licence runs to the end of the paid period and then stops.
  • Fixed-term licences simply expire on the date shown. Buy again to continue.
  • Refunds revoke the licence: students lose access to the game as soon as the refund is processed, and you receive a notice by email.
  • When a licence ends, the play data students generated stays in Insights.

Licences bought by your school

If you belong to an institution (see My Institution), your school can buy an institution-wide licence. Its seats cover the students of every teacher in the organisation, and the game appears on your students’ dashboards without you buying anything. See For Institutions.

Purchasing is governed by the Terms of Service. Payment details are handled entirely by Stripe; edu.games never sees your card number.
